The Back Story:
Many Republicans will call themselves “conservative,” but it seems in this day and age, most are not. To prove a point, simply go down the “list” of conservative values that every four-years the GOP will vote on at the convention, then take a look at how many of those values our elected Republicans actually promote and endorse.
The first one that glaringly stands out is the plank in the platform that talks about “Balancing the Nation’s Budget.”
Up until the 2018 mid-term election, Iowa had one of those Republicans that patted himself on the back and spoke of being a conservative Republican. The truth was, he was not, but most Republicans voted for him because we had no other choice. It was voting for him, or vote for the Democrat, which in Iowa means vote for a radical leftist in most cases. So most Republicans held their noses and checked “David Young.”
In case you’re not familiar with David Young, he was Senator Chuck Grassley’s Chief of Staff for years. Then back in 2014, Mr. Young decided he wanted to break away and become his own man (I’m guessing). Of course, Grassley (who walks on water in Iowa) endorsed and “told Iowa Republicans” to vote for “his boy.” And they did in droves!
Young actually did not win the primary back in 14. The contest was close, so the decision making went to state’s convention, where some back-room shenanigans went on, and young prevailed over State Senator Brad Zaun, who was actually the more popular candidate.
Yes, Iowa is filled with “party politics,” and those politics often discount the will of the voter. Are they corrupted? Sadly to some degree, yes, they are. In this incident with Senator Zaun, to this day, true conservatives in Iowa’s 3rd District still scream foul!
When the election of 2018 rolled around, Young had become very comfortable in his Washington, D.C. office and apparently did not think he had to work very hard to be re-elected. Young ran what could only be described as an abysmal campaign at best. Oh, he spent a ton of money, but it was on all of those wonderfully bland RNC (Republican National Committee) talking point ads. You know the ones. Those that you get up to go to the kitchen for a refill when they come on television.
Because of Young’s very inept campaign and the arrogance of his campaign staff, ( I know this first hand because I met them ), Young lost to now Congresswoman Cindy Axne by a healthy margin in a mostly red district. And now he wants to run for re-election!
What David Young’s arrogance and lack of having his finger on the pulse of Iowa (mostly because he hardly came back to the District) did was to serve up a Congresswoman who is very much in the same vein as Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The only difference is, Axne is a bit quieter about it than the other two. But make no mistake; she is as liberal as they come.
Freedom Works is a major conservative organization that grades House and Senate Members on their conservative voting records. If you want to know how conservative your Member of Congress is, go to their website and read their report. Former Congressman David Young had the stellar record in 2018 of 48% conservative and a lifetime record of 68%! Yes, that was tongue in cheek. In other words, DAVID YOUNG IS NOT A CONSERVATIVE! He is a milk-toast, marshmallow Republican at best and should probably re-register and run as a moderate Democrat.
Heard it through the grapevine:
I can’t say that our “hero” is riding in on a big white horse to save us from another Democrat beatdown, but I can say he was driving a beautiful new Ford 150 pickup truck.
Yesterday, I was on Facebook and got into a thread where some local Iowa folks were, in fact, fussing about former Congressman David Young. One of our arch-conservatives out in the Council Bluffs area mentioned to me that a fellow by the name of Colonel Bill Schafer had just cranked up a campaign to challenge Young in the primary. It so happened that this patriot in Western Iowa had the Colonel’s phone number. I called him!
The word “IMPRESSIVE” doesn’t do this candidate justice. If all Republicans on Capitol Hill were like this fellow, our nation would be so much better off than we are today.
After a 30-45 minute phone call, we agreed to meet up at the world-famous Pizza Ranch (Senator Rick Santorum made them famous by talking about the Iowa Pizza Ranches in a Presidential debate) in Winterset, Iowa. Two-and a half hours later, I left as a totally impressed voter. This candidate is exceptional.
- Colonel Schafer has those character traits that we often envy in high-ranking military officers. He has uncompromising honor. He has incredibly impressive integrity, and he has a moral code of ethics that I can only strive to achieve in my lifetime.
- Colonel Schafer will not support “RED Flag Laws,” as David Young did. He says, and I agree with him that red-flag-laws are unconstitutional and rob citizens of their inalienable rights.
- Colonel Schafer believes strongly in our national security, and it begins at the borders.
- Colonel Schafer wants to “rework the healthcare debacle,” but he also believes that citizens with pre-existing conditions should have a right to health coverage. Unlike Young, which is one of the primary reasons, he lost to Cindy Axne in the first place.
- Colonel Schafer believes in “legal-immigration” and does not think that illegal aliens should be entitled to any form of government assistance.
- Colonel Schafer (as you would expect) is a strong supporter of our Second-Amendment rights.
- Colonel Schafer wanted to make a point that as a father, husband, and soldier, he fully supports protecting the unborn. He is very much pro-life.
- Colonel Schafer was the Commanding Officer of Brigades of Troops in combat. A Brigade often will have 10,000-18,000 soldiers assigned to it. That makes him a “TRUE” Leader.
Patriots in Iowa and beyond; Republicans this cycle are scrambling to regain control of the House before Nancy Pelosi can do any more severe damage to our nation. Iowa’s 3rd District is a seat we can win back and put a real conservative patriot on Capitol Hill.
